Taliban Investigates Poisoning of 80 Afghan Schoolgirls in Sar-e-Pul Province

80 primary school girls in Afghanistan were poisoned and hospitalized in two separate incidents in the northern province of Sar-e-Pul.

The Taliban is investigating the attacks, which are believed to be the first of their kind since the group took power in August 2021 and began restricting the rights and freedoms of Afghan women and girls.

The girls, who were between grades 1 and 6, were poisoned at Naswan-e-Kabod Aab and Naswan-e-Faizabad schools.

The cause of the poisoning and the nature of the injuries are currently unknown, but an investigation is ongoing.

The attacks are a violation of the rights of girls to education, as women are barred from most jobs and public spaces and girls are banned from education beyond sixth grade.
