Climate Activist Greta Thunberg Fined for Disobeying Police Order at Malmö Protest

Climate activist Greta Thunberg has been fined 2,500 Swedish krona ($240; £187) for disobeying a police order to leave a climate protest in the Swedish port of Malmö last month.

Thunberg, who was found guilty of the charge, had denied it but took part in another protest and was carried away by police along with five others.

The protest in June, organised by environmental activist group Reclaim the Future, aimed to block the entrance and exit to Malmö harbour to protest against the use of fossil fuels.

Thunberg, who is known for her activism against climate change, had stated on Instagram that the group aimed to "physically stop the fossil fuel infrastructure" and "reclaim the future".

Reclaim the Future spokesperson Irma Kjellstrom told AFP news agency that the group remains determined to stand up to the fossil fuel industry, despite the court's decision to see their action as a crime.

The world has warmed by about 1.1C than it was in the late 19th century, due to greenhouse gases pumped into the atmosphere by activities such as burning fossil fuels.

Climate activists have targeted the fossil fuels industry, with much of the oil and gas industry arguing that continued production is necessary to meet global energy demands.

Thunberg's fine is the latest development in the ongoing debate over the role of fossil fuels in contributing to climate change.
