A German court has sentenced a woman to over nine years in jail for enslaving a Yazidi woman and aiding and abetting war crimes and genocide as a member of Daesh

The 37-year-old defendant traveled to Syria with her husband to join the jihadist group and kept a Yazidi woman as a slave from April 2016.

The couple forced the woman to do housework and observe Islamic rituals, and the defendant's husband regularly raped and beat her.

The Yazidi woman was released in March 2019 when the couple was arrested by Kurdish fighters.

The defendant was arrested in March 2021 upon her return to Germany.

In November 2021, a German court recognized crimes against the Yazidi community as genocide.
